FUN TRIVIA TIDBIT: Did you know that there are more bicycle-themed musicals associated with New Haven than with any other city in the WORLD? Spokesong, American premiere at Long Wharf with John Lithgow, 1978; Touring Bicycle Repair Clinic Theater, 1980; Bicycling for Ladies, Yale Cabaret, 2007; Head Over Wheels (2012) and Freewheelers (2013), A Broken Umbrella Theatre. Excerpts from some of these productions will be sung at the mini-festival.
(1) Spokesong, a musical by Stewart Parker about a bicycle shop proprietor in war-torn Belfast, which had its American premiere in 1978 at Long Wharf Theatre (featuringJohn Lithgow) before transferring to Broadway;
(2) Touring Bicycle Repair Clinic Theater, a short musical I wrote in 1979 in honor of New Haven native Paul MacCready, the aeronautical engineer who designed the first pedal-powered airplane;
(3) Bicycling for Ladies, the musical staged at Yale Cabaret in 2007 which celebrated the liberation of Victorian women through bicycling, with book and lyrics by Dorothy Fortenberry (Playwriting '08) and music by Colin Wabsgans, directed by Becca Wolff (Directing.
(4) Excerpts from two shows staged by Broken Umbrella Theatre Company - Head Over Wheels, about bicycle inventor Pierre Lallement (2012) and Freewheelers, about women cyclists in the Victorian Age (2013)
